The START-UP Summer Institute is the initial experience for freshmen entering SEBS through EOF. START-UP is a mandatory academic, career, and social experience designed to improve student performance in science courses and increase first year retention.
This year’s START-UP Summer Institute will be offered in-person (the program may be virtual, in accordance with University protocol) and will start July 5th and end July 29th. Students must commit to the four-week summer experience and devote their time to completing all tasks.
The START-UP Summer Institute will offer an intensive academic experience comprised of a multidisciplinary workshop series. The workshops include Mathematics, English Writing and Composition, Student Success, as well as Scientific Discovery.
The SEBS EOF staff is engaged in on-going planning for this experience and will have more detailed information within the coming weeks. Should you have any questions regarding START-UP, please feel free to email them at sebseof@rutgers.edu. We will get back to you soon.
The summer institute:
- Orients students to available programs and services
- Assesses students’ academic needs
- Prepares students for life at a major research institution
- Facilitates personal responsibility for the learning process
- Assists students in identifying their first-year goals and academic major
There are 7 required steps you must take to finalize your admissions to Rutgers and confirm your EOF eligibility.
Step 1: Alert your parent/ guardian that you will be participating in a residential in-person program this summer.
Program Dates: July 5 – July 29, 2022
As a SEBS EOF student, you are REQUIRED to participate in the four-week residential in-person program (the program may commence virtually, in accordance with University protocol). We are asking you to make a commitment to an in-person experience to engage in rigorous scholarly activities.
Step 2: Respond to all correspondences from HESAA, Rutgers Office of Financial Aid and SEBS EOF.
All students MUST clear the financial aid verification process through the Rutgers financial aid office before June 13th. Student must go to https://finservices.rutgers.edu/faaward/doc/missingDocLogin.htm to check for missing documents. If you do not submit all documents and are not verified EOF eligible by the Rutgers Financial Aid office as of June 1st, you may not be allowed to attend the Summer START-UP program and could jeopardize your admissions to Rutgers for the fall semester. All students will receive an email from SEBS EOF to help facilitate your EOF verification eligibility.
Step 3: Complete the SEBS EOF Summer START–UP survey.
Be sure to share with us all demographic information so that we can assist you with instruction. We will use this information to order required resources needed to be successful in your academic courses.
Step 4: Register for a SEBS EOF Academic Planning & Advisement (APA) session to select your fall 2022 academic course schedule. Saturday, June 11th at 10:00am via zoom.
All students and guardian(s) are required to attend one of the APA Days. This day is designed so that you may meet the SEBS EOF staff and learn more about Rutgers University and the amazing journey you are about to embark upon. All students will meet with an advisor to discuss fall courses and guardians will meet with the program administrators to discuss any concerns and answer questions.
Step 5: Study for the Rutgers University Placement Exam
Use these resources to study for the placement exam.

Step 7: Purchase a computer (laptops/notebooks preferred) for your personal academic use during the summer START-UP
All SEBS EOF incoming students are required to have a computing device such as a laptop or desktop. All students must also have access to reliable internet service to participate in the virtual/remote components of this summer educational experience.
Upon completing the summer program, EOF students may begin the fall semester with three undergraduate degree credits and a greater familiarity with the academic demands and the social environment of Rutgers University.
The Residence Life and Counseling components of the Summer START-UP are crucial in promoting a cohesive living and learning community where students come together with an emphasis on personal growth, academic maturity and an appreciation of diversity.
NOTE:
- As a continuation of the summer program, all SEBS EOF students participating in the campus residential program will be required to reside on G. H. Cook or the Douglass campus during their first year at the University.
- Students must complete and return the START-UP Summer Institute Forms Application prior to attending the summer program. This application will be available in early April.
